THE INTERVIEW

__________________________________________________________________________________

With your upcoming tour this winter, you are heading back to Europe.

What are you looking forward to the most?

Sion: The overall atmosphere is going to be different compared to last tour. Because of my new EP coming out that is more chaotic and loud compared to my previous work. I’m really excited to see how the European crowds react to this energy.

What inspired you to write eigensinn?

Sion: It’s a hyper pop record. Because of this I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t too serious. However, I'm a serious person at my core. So in order to break out and be more instinctive I focused on producing loud hyper pop compositions, to then fuse them with some story telling.

The word eigensinn means, how do I describe this in English.

Maybe, having too much trust in oneself with ignorance towards others.

I chose a german word for the EP because I wanted to bring it back to my roots since I was born in Germany.

What or who is your biggest inspiration at this moment in time?

Sion: Last year I fell in love with the Japanese underground music scene. They have so many great artists there and I just really like the way they tweak the pop music genre to their taste. Creating something new inspired me greatly when making eigensinn.

Now that you live in Korea, what is one thing besides family and friends that you miss the most from Germany?

Sion: I’m quite the introvert. The peaceful atmosphere is one of the biggest things I miss compared to the busy and hectic scene that is Seoul. I used to go on a lot of hikes into the forest with my family when I lived in Germany. There isn’t much forest in the city, so you need to take your time to travel out of Seoul to go on a proper forest hike.

Before I moved to South Korea, I used to admire the city vibe. Now that I live here I kind of miss the peaceful atmosphere of home.

If you could perform anywhere in the world where would it be?

Sion: I would love to one day perform in my hometown Bielefeld (DE)

KCE COMMUNITY QUESTIONS

What was the thought process between The Voice and moving to Korea for your music career? By Bekka_kn

Sion: When I dropped out of the competition I released two songs ‘Molting’ and ‘Asian’. I didn’t expect either of these songs to blow up as they did. However I noticed that once the competition is over most of the audience moves on, getting ready for the next season. Because of this I lost most if not all of my fanbase, so I accepted that The Voice was a fun experience but that I would focus on school.

I applied to the University of Cologne and went on with my studies. Then out of nowhere my label Beautiful Noise saw my blind audition. No clue how they found it!

Next thing I knew I received a personal DM from the boss of the label on instagram, I first expected it to be a scam. Luckily it wasn’t. So, now here I am!

If you had a warning sign, what would it say? By Helmistersii

Sion: I can be very straightforward when it comes to creating my music. When I cooperate with others, I will bluntly say if I do not like the sound of a beat. It might come off a bit hard at times.

Do you get stage fright? If so, how do you handle it, do you have a ritual? By _nikoletta28

Sion: I might have the most stage fright out of anyone. Especially with my new music I need to get into the right mindset of being hyped up. So, I try to move around a lot to hype myself up. Sometimes I do need a little shot of courage to get myself on the stage.

What difficulties do you face as an independent artist and how do you keep on going? By Gabija4life

Sion: There is a strange tension between kpop industry norms and that of the indie industry. Because kpop is so calculated and the norms that come with it, somehow have been adapted into the indie scene. Only as of recently, a few years ago, indie artists started to move away from this. It’s not completely gone yet.

For example we still have to distance ourselves from our fanbase in a way, we are not allowed to be intimate with them. Like how it is in the kpop industry.

Which 3 words would you use to describe your eigensinn? By Lilyc.f

Sion: Chaotic, Emo, Hyper

   KCE COMMUNITY BONUS QUESTIONS

__________________________________________________________________________________

KCE: We actually had some time to spare, so we took the time to look at some additional questions you all asked over on our instagram story. Deciding the food related questions couldn’t hurt.

What is your favourite ice cream flavour? By xuhaoluv4me

Sion: When I lived in Germany I always ate Waldmeister, it’s like a green ice cream. I really love the taste of it.

KCE: We did a little deep dive as to what ‘Waldmeister’ is.

It’s a herbal, vanilla-like flavor of woodruff flavoured icecream. That’s available in Germany and other parts of Europe.

Have you ever heard of this flavour?

We sure hadn’t. Looks like we need a trip to the German ice cream salons.

Waffles or pancakes? By Riewyaen

Sion: Pancakes. I used to make pancakes back home in Germany myself, but I especially miss the ones my mom used to make for me.

Have you ever tried churros? By yournaturalprincess

Sion: No, I haven't, maybe I will see if I can try some during my upcoming tour.

What's your weirdest, yet favourite food combination you eat? By finn.948

Sion: Back in highschool I was making myself a sandwich with Nutella and I then accidentally put a slice of ham on top of it. It was strange and It doesn’t taste great, but every so often I somehow still try it in hopes that it tastes better.
